Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a musical family on 9 August 1963 in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and cousin of singer Dionne Warwick. Whitney's mother and her began to sing professionally together at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark at the age of 15 years old. They performed the back vocals on Chaka Khans 1978 track Im Every Woman. She continued to offer backing vocals for Lou Rawls Jermaine Jackson and her own mother and did a brief stint as models on the front cover of Seventeen magazine in the year 1981. The high quality of her performance as the featured vocalist of New York funk group Material was noticed by big record companies, like Arista, with which she signed her contract in 1982, where she continued to work for the remainder of her life with them. Whitney Houston, her debut album, released in 1985 was the highest-selling album for a debut singer. On the album, she came out with several hits including Saving All My Love for You How Will You Know That You're a Good Person and The Greatest Love of All. This led to her achieving seven US number one hits consecutively. She beat even the Beatles. The album debuted in 1987 and sold 25 million copies around the world. The Whitney follow-up in 1987 with the singles What Do Broken Hearts GO and I Wanna Dance With Somebody helped to build on the success of her debut album. But it was it was the 1992 film The Bodyguard that solidified her standing as one of the most well-known artist. While the movie and the actor's performance weren't highly praised, the soundtrack album featuring her rendition of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You was her most popular single and album for several months. The album sold over 44 million copies worldwide. Her daughter Bobbi was born in the month of March of 1993, a year following her wedding to Bobby Brown. The beginning of her addiction to drugs came at this point and at the time of her death in 1996, she'd been a frequent user.

Dana Bash also known as Dana Ruth Schwartz is an American anchorwoman for news and reporting and political correspondent for CNN.
