Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a musical family on 9 August 1963 in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and cousin of singer Dionne Warwick. Whitney's mother and her began to sing professionally together at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark at the age of 15 years old.
